Can Dory Carry a Movie By Herself?

She's going to try, but I'm skeptical. Pixar's announced their three major releases that will take us through 2016. Two of the coming attractions (The Good Dinosaur and Inside Out, the latter of which has a premise I'm not entirely enchanted by) are, thankfully, original features. But because the world just can't have enough sequels, we're also getting a Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory, in 2016.

With the exception of the sterling Toy Story sequels, Pixar's first forays into franchises (Cars 2 and Monsters University) definitely haven't earned the same accolades that Pixar's other classic pictures have. And when you're hanging your entire movie on a character who thrived in a supporting role, I'm pretty skeptical about Finding Dory. What made Dory so delightful in Finding Nemo was the fact that she always had the anxious Marlin beside her to play straight man, and the chemistry and dialogue was fantastic. But if Dory's the star of the show, and showing off her giggle-inducing-short-term-memory-loss without a sharper-minded character to ground her, I worry that Finding Dory will quickly lose its way.

  1. I'm with you. Besides the debatable issue of Pixar making sequels in a seeming prioritization of marketability, Dory was comic relief in Finding Nemo. I can't see how that character will be anything but tiring as a lead.

  2. Kinda seems like making an Edna Mode spinoff from The Incredibles, doesn't it?
